The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded a $9.7m contract to NovAtel for developing the next-generation wide area augmentation system (WAAS) reference receiver.

The WAAS provides corrected data and information to increase the accuracy and integrity of GPS satellite signals.

NovAtel director of aviation programmes Michael Clayton said the technology refresh for the FAA WAAS system will add support to the latest generation L1C, L2C and L5 signal capability, on a qualified RTCA DO-178B software and DO-254 hardware platform.

The WAAS receiver programme is expected to be complete by 2012 and will provide additional signal capabilities such as the European Galileo satellite navigation satellite system.

NovAtel will develop 14 receivers as a part of the receiver development and qualification programme.
