Orlando International Airport in the US will get two new TSA canine teams to improve explosives detection capabilities at the air cargo facilities.

Orlando is the second city in Florida, after Miami, to get these TSA proprietary teams.

Orlando canine teams have undergone a rigorous ten-week training course at Lackland AFB, San Antonio and are certified in their local environment.

The teams, consisting of one dog and a TSA inspector canine handler are fully operational and will primarily search cargo bound for passenger-carrying aircraft.

Orlando federal security director John Daly said that the canine teams are one of the quickest, most efficient means of detecting explosives.

“The two new TSA teams provide flexibility in searching air cargo and the ability to surge resources in other modes of transportation such as seen today at LYNX during their VIPR [visible intermodal protection and response] operation,” Daly said.

TSA will also deploy canine teams to various airports with the greatest volume of cargo on passenger-carrying aircraft.

TSA canine handlers are non-law enforcement employees. More than 600 TSA-certified state, local and federal law enforcement teams are deployed all over the nation serving more than 90 airports and mass transit systems.
