Raleigh-Durham International Airport has received $2.5m from the NC Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation to replace 2,000 runway and taxiway lights with energy-efficient LED fixtures.

The total project could cost around $8.6m.

This amount follows the announcement of $4.5m by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) given to the airport under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The lighting project at the airport includes the transition from conventional quartz fixtures to FAA-approved LED fixtures as it reduces energy costs up to 60% and eliminates time-consuming maintenance.

The airport has awarded the LED lighting project to Barnes & Powell Electric Company. Work on the project will begin in July 2009 and is expected to be complete by May 2010.
