A new 2km-long track section that connects Glasgow Central Station and Glasgow International Airport is to be constructed at a cost of £130m.

The work on the Glasgow Airport rail link (GARL) will begin once Transport Scotland issues the tender to four teams, which will bid for this contract in June 2009.

Transport Scotland is currently preparing final documentation for the branch line phase 1 contract to be issued in June 2009, according to a report in Construction News, quoting a spokesperson from Transport Scotland.

The new rail link features a single-span bridge over the M8 motorway and provides a service from Glasgow Central Station to the new airport station every 15 minutes.

The GARL project is expected to be complete by 2013 and will be fully operational for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
