The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded Northrop Grumman a contract to provide low-cost ground surveillance systems (LCGS) at US airports.
Initially, the LCGS will be installed at Reno and Nevada Airports, the contract also provides options for other additional US airports.
The new NOVA 9000 LCGS processes and integrates radar and related data of aircraft and vehicles, and displays the information as graphical views on screens in control towers.
The FAA believes that installation of LCGS at medium and small-size airports is critical, especially where air traffic controllers depend on the ‘out-of-the-window’ view to avoid conflicts and maintain operational capacity and safety.
This view can be extremely dangerous during adverse weather conditions that could compromise safety for travellers.
