India Earmarks Rs30bn for Airport Development

Rs30bn ($638m) has been earmarked by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) for the undertaking of development works in airports across the country during 2009 and 2010.

Speaking at the launch of a new terminal building at Tiruchirapalli Airport in Chennai, AAI regional executive director (southern region) D Devaraj said that out of the total amount, Rs20bn ($424.5m) was for carrying out developmental works at Chennai Airport.

The new integrated terminal cost Rs800m ($16.98m) and has two aerobridges.

The development works include the expansion of the secondary runway across the Adyar River at Chennai Airport, which is expected to be complete by 2011.

In addition, Madurai Airport will be upgraded with Rs1250m ($26.5m) being sanctioned by AAI.

The improvements at Mangalore and Coimbatore Airports have already begun with investments of Rs900m ($19.1m) and Rs700m ($14.86m) respectively.
