Noise generated by an airport can now be reduced using General Electric’s (GE)new automatic computation and throttle control method that decreases the noise levels of aircraft taking off from the airport.

The system aims to meet the noise constraints via real-time commanding of engine power through the flight management system, flightglobal reports.

The new system takes into account an aircraft’s weight, the ambient temperature, altitude, air speed, onboard engine noise characteristics and stored sound exposure levels along a departure route for noise abatement.

It also reduces the serious environmental concerns to society, particularly to those living in the vicinity of the airport.

The solution will be useful only if the aircraft’s elevation is 800ft (244m) above the airport and the rate-of-climb is greater than 1,000ft/min (5.08m/s).
