Bahrain International Airport has awarded a $36.5m contract to US construction company Hill International for the airport’s expansion.
The contract was agreed on a four-year base term with a four-year optional extension period.
The project includes construction of two new passenger terminals, aprons, separate piers, a people mover system, car parking, road works and infrastructure.
Bahrain Airport’s long-term expansion project includes five phases of construction and is expected to be complete by 2030. The capacity of the airport will increase to 28 million after its completion.
The first phase of the construction will start in early 2010. After its completion in 2011 the airport’s annual capacity will increase from seven million people to 12 million, reports Arabian Business, quoting a top official of Bahrain Airports Company (BAC).
The second phase of the construction will begin in 2012 and is expected to be complete by 2015.
