In an effort to tackle climate change, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has called on countries to deliver global as well as sectoral approaches in reducing aviation emissions.
IATA’s director general and CEO Giovanni Bisignani said global accounting was needed for aviation’s emissions through the International Civil Aviation Organisation and open access for airlines to properly regulated carbon markets.
This worldwide effort to reduce aviation emissions includes improving fuel efficiency, using alternative fuels and reduce emissions by 50% before 2050.
Bisignani said that one of the most exciting recent developments is the progress being made in sustainable next-generation biofuels.
Aviation emissions are set to fall by 8% in 2009. Out of which, 6% is due to recession and 2% is directly related to measures taken by the IATA.
