Rhode Island’s largest airport, TF Green, is planning to extend its main runway by 1,600ft to accommodate more flights under a plan approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The extension will extend the runway to 8,700ft and will allow non-stop flight services to the West Coast and Europe, abc6.com reports.

The project details are still under review and is expected to begin in summer 2010.

But plans are proving controversial as the work would require the demolition of 11 homes and ten businesses.
