Australia’s Darwin International Airport will have a new $100m home and lifestyle centre in the airport’s business park, under a new proposal that has just been given planning approval.
For the large-scale project on airport land, consensus is needed by local and territorial government as well as major stakeholders.

Minister for infrastructure, transport, regional development and local government Anthony Albanese said that the federal go-ahead was an important step for implementing major retail development plan at the airport.
Darwin International Airport CEO Ian Kew said he is confident that the airport will soon secure a new joint venture partner with which to complete the project given the more favourable economic conditions in Darwin, relative to elsewhere in Australia.
An original proposal was agreed on in 2007 when Darwin International Airport teamed up with Sydney developer Ticor to develop the centre on a nine-hectare block of land in the airport’s business park. But this agreement expired in November 2008 during the economic downturn.
