A study into the site and size of a new air traffic control tower is underway at Southwest Florida International Airport after its parallel runway project gained planning approval.

The $5m runway project includes site preparation construction and design services, as well as apron and taxiway design services, according to a report by airportbusiness.com.

The agreement between the FAA and Lee Port Authority to conduct a site study for replacing the air control tower at the airport will cost about $400,000.

The authority is expecting to receive reimbursement for much of the project cost through federal and state grants.
