Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has completed its largest-ever integrated typhoon drill in a joint effort with the airport community.

More than 600 staff from about 20 organisations and government departments participated in the exercise, testing responses related to various weather contingencies from flight rescheduling, flight information display and crowd management to baggage handling.

As soon as they received the warning of a typhoon, the Airport Authority (AA) immediately alerted airlines, the Civil Aviation Department (CAD), airport workers and the Hong Kong Police.

As the simulation continued, typhoon signals were hoisted and briefings held. In view of the rising number of affected flights and passengers, the airport emergency centre swung into full operation, serving as the control and coordination to minimise operational disruptions.

The CAD, the AA, airlines and ground operators worked together as flight schedules continued to change due to stormy weather.

The AA conducts more than 90 seminars, drills and exercises every year, 15 of which are related to weather disruptions. Through these initiatives, the airport community tests the readiness of its joint contingency plans.
