East Midlands Airport in the UK is planning to extend its runway by 1.9 miles to provide new range of services for long-haul and heavy carriers.

If the expansion plans are given the go-ahead the airport will be able to introduce long-haul flights, according to a report released by Leicestershire County Council, which also stated that the environmental effect of the plan would be minimal and noise levels will only rise slightly.

The airport previously applied for an extension plan in 2000, planning to launch flights to US hubs, the Airport Operators Association reported.

A final decision on the plans is expected in the summer.
