A $63.5m runway extension at Portland International Airport will start from 1 May to reduce the aircraft noise impacts for the nearby residents.
The runway will be completed in two phases. The first phase of the project includes the extension of the North runway to 9,827ft from 8,000ft for larger propeller aircrafts that need further length for take-off.
The runway will be fully operational by 2011 when the longer south runway closes for restoration.
The Federal Aviation Administration has granted $50m and ConnectOregon II. has anticipated an additional $6m needed for runway extension and restoration.
