Smiths Detection EDS

The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has certified Smiths Detection’s HI-SCAN 10080 XCT explosives detection system (EDS) for high-speed checked baggage screening.

Smiths Detection’s EDS offers imaging solutions based on the company’s dual-energy, dual-view X-ray technology and Analogic’s Computed Tomography (CT) technology.

Smiths Detection president Mal Maginnis said that the system complies with stringent security screening requirements, which will improve airport operations and trim costs.

"With TSA laboratory certification now added to EU EDS Standard 3 approval, the HI-SCAN 10080 XCT is ideally suited for installation at all major airports outside the US," Maginnis said.

Incorporating multi-energy x-ray technology and Analogic’s three-dimensional CT, the new ADS system has a belt speed of 98 feet per minute, which allows screening up to 1,800 bags per hour.

"The system complies with stringent security screening requirements, which will improve airport operations and trim costs."

The system comes with the larger tunnel size that allows screening of bigger and more bags automatically compared to other systems.

According to Smiths Detection, lab certification of detection performance is important for systems as the company’s seeks it to be included in the TSA’s Qualified Products List, which is a precondition for implementation at US airports.

Following the completion of certification, Smiths Detection must now coordinate the additional testing with TSA at its integration facility, as well as operational testing at a US airport.

The HI-SCAN 10080 XCT EDS has previously qualified for the European Union Commission Regulation Standard 3 for Aviation Safety, being marketed globally outside the US.
