The UK Government has secured the direct air service between London Stansted and Dundee City Airport for another two years with an additional investment of more than £1.8m.
Agreed between the UK Government, Dundee City Council and Transport Scotland, the public service obligation (PSO) will provide approximately £3.7m to keep the route open during financial years from 2017 to 2019.
Of the total funds, 50% will be contributed by the UK government, the Scottish Government will fund another £1.4m, and Dundee City Council will contribute £400,000.
UK Government Minister for Scotland Lord Andrew Dunlop said: “It’s great news for Dundee that the UK Government is investing a further £1.8m over two years in the Dundee-London air route, building on our investment of £2.85m over the past two years.
“Good air connectivity is vital to Dundee’s prosperity and its ambitious regeneration plans. There is a huge amount going on in Dundee, and London air links offer fantastic opportunities for Tayside.”
From 26 March, Scottish regional airline Loganair will continue to serve the Dundee-London route with two return flights each weekday and one return flight on Sundays.
Launched as the first government PSO in 2014, the Dundee-London route aims to support Dundee as a business and tourist location by providing additional travel options.
Scottish Government Minister for Transport Humza Yousaf said: “The award of this contract to Loganair is welcome news which provides continuity of service on this important route.
“This flight not only provides a direct link to London but also offers passengers a wide number of onward connecting destinations from Stansted. This will continue to benefit business and leisure travellers alike.”
Flight times between London Stansted Airport and Dundee City Airport currently stand at nearly an hour and a half.
