Saab's remote tower (r-TWR) system has completed site acceptance testing (SAT) for Norwegian air navigation service provider (ANSP) Avinor.
The SAT marks the completion of the V3 stage under the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) test and validation trials that commenced in June 2012.
The r-TWR system aims to offer enhanced-resolution video of daily helicopter operations for Avinor Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS) officers at the Bodø Remote Tower Center (RTC) at Værøy.
The Saab r-TWR technologies and operations for Værøy's heliport, which is a low-traffic site served by four scheduled flights per day, will be incorporated with SESAR-developed capabilities for validation by the SESAR programme for AFIS.
Saab ATM general manager Ken Kaminski said that the company's remote tower technology is progressing towards acceptance and SESAR validation.
"The milestone is also important in this application as it aims to demonstrate the remote tower technology's ability to withstand severe weather conditions," Kaminski said.
Saab is also trialling an Infra Red camera in real-life scenarios at Værøy to determine its benefits during rough weather and operations during the night.
Saab's r-TWR system has previously completed site acceptance testing for Sweden's ANSP LFV for deployment at Sundsvall and Örnsköldsvik Airports in Sweden.
Incorporating several video, audio and other sensors, Saab's r-TWR system will offer a continual, comprehensive view out of an air traffic control tower.
The system captures the video and other sensor information, which will be fed to a RTC where the information will be streamed live to an AFIS officer on several LCD displays.
The officers will have complete control over all deployed sensors and airfield lighting in addition to other incorporated flight data, electronic flight strips and other ATC tools.
