Passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport surged by 20.6% in March

Passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport has risen 20.6% during March 2013 to 5.8 million, compared to the 4.84 million handled during March 2012, which was mainly driven by growth on the Eastern European routes.

Passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport has risen 20.6% during March 2013 to 5.8 million, compared to the 4.84 million handled during March 2012, which was mainly driven by growth on the Eastern European routes.

The airport has served more than five million passengers for the fourth consecutive month and recorded its highest passenger traffic since August 2012.

Dubai International Airport handled 16.4 million passengers during the first three months of this year, recording 15.6% growth when compared to the corresponding period last year.

The ighest passenger growth was recorded on the Western European routes, following Emirates airline launched new services to Poland and flydubai launched service to Macedonia.

"The airport has served more than five million passengers for the fourth consecutive month and recorded its highest passenger traffic since August 2012."

The airport operator Dubai Airports said that Eastern Europe recorded highest passenger growth of 67.9%, which was following by Asia Pacific region recording a growth of 26.5%.

Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said that the airport completed a successful first quarter highlighted by record growth and the opening of the world’s first purpose built A380 facility.

"I am particularly pleased that we are now not only the world’s second busiest international hub but also one of the most efficient with 208 passengers per aircraft movement thanks to our growing number of A380 operations, which led the world in 2012 with 7,259 A380 flights to 28 destinations," Griffiths said.

Passenger growth on South American routes recorded low growth of 2,532, while Middle Eastern routes recorded a moderate growth of 36,479.

Aircraft movement during the month increased 8.3% year-on-year to 31,713, while in the first three months aircraft movements grew 5.9% to 91,130 compared to the corresponding quarter in 2012.

Cargo volume during the month increased 14.7%, while cargo volume during the quarter increased 13% to 584,847t.
