Hong Kong International Airport reports 8% rise in March passenger traffic

Passenger traffic at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) increased by 8% in March 2013 to five million compared to 4,632,000 passengers handled during the corresponding month in 2012.

During the period, aircraft movements at HKIA rose by 3.2% to 30,540, while cargo throughput dropped by 2.2% to 360,000t, over the same period last year.

According to the airport operator, Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), domestic traffic contributed to the rise in traffic, which grew by 18%, while passenger traffic to/from South East Asia and Mainland China surpassed other major regions.

The drop in cargo throughput was mainly due to a 7% decline in exports, while imports also dropped during the month, with transshipments registering a 7% rise comapred to March 2012.

"The first quarter of 2013 ended with record-breaking traffic figures, and the airport broke the single-day record for passengers twice in two months."

HKIA reported a 5.2% rise in its passenger traffic during the first quarter of 2013 (1Q13) to 14.3 million, while the cargo volume and aircraft movements rose 1.3% and 3.9% to 942,000t and 88,495 respectively.

AAHK chief executive officer Stanley Hui Hon-chung said that the first quarter of 2013 ended with record-breaking traffic figures, and the airport broke the single-day record for passengers twice in two months.

"With the declared runway capacity of HKIA further increased to 64 flights per hour in the summer schedule, the average number of daily scheduled flights has reached 1,037," Hon-chung said.

During the consecutive 12-month period, passenger traffic at the airport rose 4.1% to 57.2 million, while cargo traffic and aircraft movements reached 4.04 million tonnes and 354,980 respectively, representing yearly rises of 2.9% and 4.7%.
