Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has reported double-digit air passenger traffic growth as well as a significant rise in the flight movements and freight volumes in January.
During the first month of this year, the passenger figures rose 13.3% to 5.9 million, while flight movements rose 5.4% to 35,195 and air cargo traffic increased by 1.5% to 361,000t.
The significant year-on-year growth in the passenger numbers during the month is a result of 17% hike in Hong Kong resident travel.
Also, increase in passenger traffic to and from Southeast Asia and Mainland China added to the double-digit growth of passenger traffic at HKIA.
Visitor traffic recorded a growth of 13%, while transfer or transit traffic was up by 11% last month.
The year-on-year increase of 3% in export as well as transshipment figures has been a key cause for the noticeable rise in the cargo volume shipped during the period.
Air freight flow to and from the major trading regions in Australasia and Europe showed a significant growth as compared to other main regions.
Airport Authority Hong Kong Airport Operations executive director C K Ng said: "Along with the continuous steady growth in monthly figures, we are delighted to report new daily record set since the beginning of the year.
"A new record of 1,227 flight movements in a single day was seen on 6 February, two days before the Chinese New Year.
"The strong momentum in passenger traffic continued during the Chinese New Year holiday, with an average of over 200,000 daily passengers recorded from 6 February to 13 February."
On a 12-month basis, passenger traffic at HKIA reached 9.1% to 69.2 million, while the flight numbers climbed 4.1% to 407,830 over the same period last year. Cargo volume increased 0.1% to 4.4 million tonnes.
C K Ng added: "HKIA's extensive flight network also continued to expand with the addition of a new destination, Australia's Gold Coast.
"Hong Kong Airlines' new route to the Gold Coast and Cairns commenced operation in January, offering three direct flights to these Australian destinations each week."
