The European GNSS Agency (GSA) has implemented the first European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) LPV-200 approaches at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.
LPV-200 enables aircraft approach procedures that are operationally equivalent to CAT I instrument landing system (ILS) procedures.
This enables vertical guidance during final approach segments (FAS) without any need for visual contact with the ground to a decision height (DH) of 200ft above the runway.
The LPV-200 service level is in line with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) precision approach requirements.
However, it does not involve the expensive ground infrastructure that is required for ILS.
GSA executive director Carlo des Dorides said: "EGNOS LPV-200 is now the most cost-effective and safest solution for airports requiring CAT I approach procedures.
"The involvement of major aircraft manufacturers confirms that this service is a real added-value for civil aviation setting the basis for a better rationalisation of nav-aids in European airports."
The LPV-200 procedures provide benefits, including reduced delays, cancellations and diversions, as well as enhanced airport operations and safety levels.
It also helps reduce carbon emissions and fuel consumption, as well as lower the environmental impact caused by aviation operations.
The approach was flown by ATR 42-600, Dassault Falcon 2000 aircraft and Airbus A350. The first LPV-200 landed on runway 26L at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.
