Frequentis’s VCS system goes live at Aeronautica Civil de Colombia

Colombian air navigation service provider (ANSP) Aeronautica Civil de Colombia has put into operation Frequentis's voice communication system (VCS) at its air traffic control centre and the control tower, following the completion of site acceptance tests (SAT).

The new technology for voice communication and recording incorporates synchronised replay of voice and local recorded third-party radar data.

VCS is also equipped with an integrated IP backup system for all radio and telephone connections, which will allow air traffic controllers to communicate during emergency situations, including those when VCS fails to operate.

Frequentis said that the VCS system will allow traffic controllers to communicate with the same touch-screen without requiring any change or re-plug of positional equipment.

The VCS system complies with EUROCAE WG67 and ICAO Document 9896 voice over internet protocol (VoIP) in air traffic management (ATM) standards

Based on the VCS3020X platform, the system will operate through traditional time-division multiplexing (TDM) and allow interconnecting multiple airports with a remote tower centre.

According to Frequentis, the new integrated system allows Colombian ANSP to benefit from main and backup communication in addition to economic implementation and maintenance of the complete system.

Frequentis's VCS 3020X, which is a voice and data switch, allows integrated voice communications for radio, telephone and intercom within a single system, with infinite conferencing capabilities.

The system allows migration from TDM to normal IP operator position links through parallel support of TDM-based and structured or point-to-point Ethernet/IP-links.

Offering a capacity of 8,000 channels through connected multiple system nodes, the 3020X allows splitting of the system into eight duplicated switching nodes that are interconnected through a replicated optical fibre backbone which will deliver both voice and data.
