Dublin Airport in Ireland has invested €15m to upgrade its departures floor and security screening area in Terminal One.

Dublin Airport managing director Vincent Harrison said: "Almost 400 million passengers have used Terminal One since it first opened for airport operations 44 years ago.

"The building has endured much wear and tear over that time and we are renovating it on a phased basis starting with departures and the security screening area."

As part of the investment, the airport will install 15 automatic tray return systems (ATRS) in the passenger security screening area.

The new machines are 6m longer than the existing ATRS systems, and feature a parallel loading area that allows four passengers to load trays simultaneously.

The new system enables faster passenger processing while adhering to security compliance processes.

"The new ATRS machines, which are much quieter and more efficient, will improve the overall ambience of the area giving our customers a better experience."

Harrison added: "We are confident the new ATRS machines, which are much quieter and more efficient, will improve the overall ambience of the area giving our customers a better experience."

Dublin Airport has already installed five ATRS machines. The rest will be installed by the end of May.

A new façade has been installed on the walls of the airport’s departures floor, and airline ticket desks have been removed from window areas, allowing more natural light into the concourse.

Dublin Airport handled a record number of 25 million passengers in 2015.
