Dubai international airport reports 10.4% rise in May passenger traffic

Dubai International airport (DXB) has reported a 10.4% rise in traffic with 4.3 million passengers recorded in May 2012.

Dubai International airport (DXB) has reported a 10.4% rise in traffic with 4.3 million passengers recorded in May 2012.

Passenger traffic at Dubai International increased to 23.21 million during the initial five months of 2012, which is a 13.2% rise when compared to the 20.5 million recorded during the corresponding months in 2011.

Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said that Dubai International has had a strong showing in terms of passenger traffic so far in 2012 with double-digit growth recorded in four of the first five months.

"With forecasts suggesting the growth trend to continue during the second half of the year, we are well on track to achieve the projected traffic of 56.5 million by the end of 2012," Griffiths said.

The Gulf region contributed the highest rise in passenger numbers during the period with 105,052 travellers, subsequently Africa registered 61,306 passengers, Western Europe 57,602 and the Indian subcontinent 55,330.

South American routes recorded the highest passenger growth with 114.2%, while traffic on routes to Russia and The CIS increased 43.7% during May, which is thought to have been boosted by flydubai's ongoing expansion into the region.

Passenger traffic in the Middle East continued to be affected by instability though, reporting a 2.5% decline.Aircraft movements at Dubai Airport increased 5% in May, rising to 28,304. The year-to-date aircraft movements increased 7.2% to 142,821, up from the 133,271 recorded during the corresponding period in 2011.

Dubai International's cargo volume declined 0.1% to 187,638t in May, when compared to the 187,905t recorded during May 2011, while the year-to-date freight volume increased 1.4% to 891,464t.
