Canada’s Calgary Airport Authority has introduced a new Pre-Board Pals programme to improve passengers’ experience at Calgary International Airport (YYC).

The Pre-Board Pals programme will provide dogs of several breeds to interact with passengers before they board their flights.

The initiative is a joint collaboration of the Calgary Airport Authority and the Authority and Pet Access League Society (PALS), and could be successfully launched two years after the project was first proposed.

Calgary Airport Authority president and chief executive officer Garth Atkinson said: "Pre-Board Pals demonstrates our commitment and passion for providing an amazing airport experience at YYC.

"With millions of guests travelling through our airport each year, we know that our new pals will be another positive touchpoint for our passengers."

Launched on National Pet Day, the programme will offer four dogs at a time at the airport.

The dogs will roam about the terminals in shifts, greeting the passengers during peak travel times.

They will be accompanied by their owners dressed in red vests, reported Calgary Sun.

PALS executive director Diana Segboer said: "We have an incredible team of dogs, and handlers, that the passengers at Calgary International Airport are absolutely going to love.

Calgary Airport is one of several airports across North America and Alberta, including Edmonton and Fort McMurray, which keeps dogs to interact with passengers.
