The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) has approved two new projects that would connect nine terminals at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in the US.
As part of the first project, LAX will upgrade Terminals 2 and 3 and connect them to the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT).
BOAC also voted in favour of a lease agreement with Southwest Airlines for the construction of a new building, Terminal 1.5, which will connect Terminals 1 and 2.
The terminal will also provide space for additional ticket counters, baggage carousels, a bus gate and an additional security screening checkpoint.
Delta Air Lines intends to invest $1.9bn in the terminal redevelopment project.
The project would include the modernisation of Terminal 2's concourse, the redevelopment of Terminal 3, and the demolition and rebuilding of passenger and baggage processing facilities.
BOAC president Sean Burton said: “Plans for the dramatic renovation of Terminals 2 and 3, spearheaded by Delta Air Lines, and the new building between Terminals 1 and 2 are two of the keys to eventually connecting the entire airport beyond the security checkpoints.
“This will mean easier connections, along with more freedom of movement for guests throughout all nine of our terminals.”
The 417,515ft2 Terminal 1.5 will be a six-level facility connecting the non-secured arrivals and departures areas of Terminals 1 and 2.
In addition, the connection on the Concourse Level will be on the secured side of the building, enabling passengers to easily move between the terminals.
The new facility, which is estimated to cost $490m, is expected to open for passengers in 2020.
