BAA passenger traffic remained stable during September 2012

British airport operator BAA reported stable passenger traffic at its five UK airports, which handled 9.2m passengers in September 2012, the same amount as the corresponding month in 2011.

British airport operator BAA reported stable passenger traffic at its five UK airports, which handled 9.2m passengers in September 2012, the same amount as the corresponding month in 2011.

Passenger traffic signalled an improvement over recent short-term declines of 4.1% in July and 2% in August 2012.

During September, BAA's Heathrow reported the highest rise in passenger traffic to 0.6% with 6.3 million passengers.

BAA chief executive Colin Matthews said that Heathrow Airport saw a record number of passengers in September.

"Traffic to and from the BRIC economies, other than India, demonstrates the on-going importance of hub capacity to connect the UK to growth markets," Matthews said.

"The Davies Commission must rigorously and objectively assess every option to meet our country's economic needs."

Heathrow reported a 0.2% rise in its scheduled European traffic; routes to and from Spain reported a 6.2% rise and traffic on routes to Greece and Portugal declined 4.8% during the month.

Indian to-and-fro passenger traffic at Heathrow airport declined 7%, while Brazil, China and North Atlantic traffic increased, with 14%, 5.9% and 4.5% rises respectively during the month.

Passenger traffic at BAA's Stansted and Southampton airports declined 4.0% and 4.4% respectively during the month, down from September 2011.

During the month, passenger traffic at Aberdeen and Glasgow increased 1.4% and 5.6%, representing a total rise of 4.4% at Scottish airports.

BAA reported a 2.5% rise in cargo traffic to 140,847t, with 1.7% and 5.2% rises registered at Heathrow and Stansted airports respectively.

Air Transport Movements at BAA's five airports declined 2.3% to 70,275 during September 2012.
