Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has extended opening times for the 'small bags only' security lanes at its security checkpoints.
The security lanes allow passengers to pass through security checkpoints more easily and quickly, and are open for passengers who are carrying no luggage or only a small amount of hand baggage.
Travellers who intend to use the 'small bags only' security lanes are allowed to carry one item of luggage, such as a small handbag, a backpack or a laptop bag, measuring 40cm × 30cm × 20cm.
The airport will evaluate the extended opening times after this year's autumn holiday period.
During the summer holidays this year, Amsterdam Schiphol tested the 'small bags only' security lanes at its security checkpoints at peak hours.
The study revealed that 15% to 20% of additional passengers passed through the 'small bags only' security lanes during the same period of time compared to the regular security lanes.
In addition, the test results showed that the waiting time for 95% of passengers travelling through the airport gates in July and August was approximately between zero and ten minutes.
The fixed and extended opening times of the lanes will apply up to and include the autumn holiday period.
The 'small bags only' security lanes have been deployed at Departure Halls 1, 2 and 3 at the airport, while Departure Halls 1a and 4 do not have the facility.
