Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in the US has awarded a contract to Balfour Beatty Construction for the Terminal 4 Gate Replacement project.

Balfour will work jointly with James A. Cummings for the $100m contract, part of Broward County Aviation Department's $1bn expansion programme to enhance airport infrastructure.

Under the first phase of the project, Balfour will replace the existing concourse and alter its orientation from north-south to east-west, in order to create space for the extension of the south runway.

The project will also include creating expansive, diverse interior spaces to support the airport's growing international market.

Pre-construction for the project will begin this year, while the phased construction will begin next year.
