The Thai Government has approved the expansion of Suvarnabhumi International Airport to increase its passenger capacity to 60 million a year.

The expansion will include the construction of a satellite passenger terminal, to be located about 800m south of the existing terminal.

It will also include construction of a new concourse to accommodate 28 aircraft, including A380 superjumbo jets, as well as new taxiways, buildings for airline offices and car parking.

Airports of Thailand will contribute THB45.05bn ($1.4bn) and secure another THB17.45bn ($553m) from external sources as part the THB62bn ($1.9bn) expansion project.

The construction, set to begin in 2012, is expected to finish in 2015, according to the Bangkok Post.
