Phuket International Airport in Thailand is set to begin a major terminal expansion to increase its passenger capacity to 12.5 million each year.

The terminal expansion, which will cost THB5.8bn ($183m), will begin in 2011 and finish in March 2014.

It will involve construction of a new terminal and conversion of the existing terminal to a domestic terminal, according to phuketwan.com.

Airports of Thailand president Serirat Prasutanond said that further capacity expansion to 15 million could only be achieved by demolishing existing staff quarters at the airport's southern edge.
