Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) in India has unveiled plans to expand Terminal 1 (T1) at Bangalore International Airport (BLR) to handle increased passenger traffic.

The expanded T1 will enable BLR to handle 17 million passengers each year from its current 10.6 million passengers to meet projected increases in passenger traffic between now and 2015.

The expansion project, estimated to cost INR10bn ($215m) and spread over an area of 1,34,000m², will finish in 18 months.

It will increase the airport's floor area to 134,000m² from 72,000m², including 15 Code C and seven Code E boarding gates, 83 check-in counters and 13 baggage reclaim belts.

There will also be a provision to develop a Code F Board for handling the Airbus 380 airliner in future.
