The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has given Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the US funding to install a new runway lighting system.
The airport received $5m, part of a total $9m American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant, to install a new approach lighting system for Runway 27L.
The system will give pilots visual information as they approach during bad weather, and is expected to improve capacity, operational capability and safety at the airport.
FAA administrator Randy Babbitt said that the system will give pilots an extra layer of safety.
The FAA has also provided an additional $4.2m to upgrade aviation facilities around the Atlanta area.
