The second phase of upgrade work at Kota Kinabalu International Airport in Malaysia, including a runway expansion, has been delayed and is now scheduled to be complete in March 2011.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the runway expansion is still not complete and the contractor has been given a new deadline of March next year.

Phase two involves the extension of the runway from 2,988m to 3,780m among other works, according to Bernama.com.

The project contractor Global Upline was given April 2009 as the original time line for phase two completion, but has now been granted two extensions to complete the work.

The delay has been attributed to the environmental impact assessment report on reclamation works, which might affect the local environment.
