Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has recommended that Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) does not sell Los Angeles Ontario International Airport in California, US.

LAWA executive director Gina Marie has said that Villaraigosa is against selling the airport back, despite projections that passenger traffic will not rebound to pre-recession levels until 2040.

The airport is considering consolidating airline operations into a single terminal to cut costs or bringing in a private company or local government to take management responsibility.

Ontario International Airport has experienced a drop in passenger traffic from about 7.2 million a year at the start of 2008 to about 4.9 million at the end of 2009, according to the Associated Press.
