The US's Portland International Airport north runway will remain closed completely for construction work, which began on 3 August.

The runway will be partially re-opened in mid-September and fully opened once the expansion is complete in mid-October.

The work, part of the second phase of a three-year runway rehabilitation programme worth $71m, will extend the north runway from its current length of 8,000ft to 9,825ft.

The extension will enable the north runway to accommodate larger aircraft, which require extra length for takeoff, when the longer south runway closes for a six-month rehabilitation project in 2011.
