Abu Dhabi International Airport in the UAE has received platinum airport status from the International Air Transport Association for adopting 100% barcoded boarding passes (BCBP).

The 2D barcoded boarding pass will offer an alternative to queuing at check-in desks by providing passengers with their boarding passes online or at on-site digital kiosks.

Chief executive officer of Abu Dhabi Airports Company James E Bennett said the technology would pave the way for airlines to issue boarding passes to passengers' mobile phones.

Abu Dhabi Airport adopted the system six months ahead of schedule as part of the aviation industry's target of converting to 100% BCBP by the end of 2010.
