Mumbai International Airport in India will close its main runway for eight hours every day for four months as part of an upgrade programme.

The airport will close its 11,300ft 0927 runway from 9am until 5pm, six days a week during the upgrade work, which is expected to begin in October this year.

The project will involve levelling the whole runway and expanding it to 60m from 45m to enable the smooth landing and takeoff of A380s, according to NDTV Profit.

During the upgrade work, Mumbai air traffic will be handled by the 9,600ft secondary runway.
