Abbotsford International Airport in Canada will receive a makeover as part of an expansion plan, which aims to increase capacity to cater for growing numbers of passenger in the years ahead.

The airport will receive C$30m as part of a C$55m infrastructure deal with the City of Abbotsford and the provincial and federal government for the expansion, according to vancouversun.com.

The project will include the expansion of taxiways to double the arrival rate, aircraft parking spaces and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by reducing aircraft taxi times and delays.

The expansion is set to begin within weeks and will be finished by the end of this year.

Abbotsford Airport currently handles around 120,000 take-offs and landings each year, with an annual growth averaging 5-7%.
