The project to build a second runway at Stansted Airport in Essex will be delayed by at least five years, according to a pre-election British Labour Party manifesto released this year.

The manifesto said it will continue to support the idea of a third runway at Heathrow but will not allow additional runways at any of the country's other airports during the next parliament if it gets into power, according to the BBC.

The second runway at Stansted faces strong opposition from the Stop Stansted Expansion campaign as well as opposition parties, including the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.

According to the British Airports Authority (BAA), the second runway planned for 2017 was estimated to cater for 68 million passengers a year by around 2030.
