Christchurch Airport in New Zealand handled its highest number of passenger traffic yet in March 2010.

The airport catered for 557,748 passengers, including domestic and international traffic - an increase of 4% - compared with the same period last year.

Christchurch Airport's domestic traffic rose 3% and international traffic rose 6% compared with the same period in 2009.

Christchurch Airport chief executive Jim Boult said the record numbers are great news for the tourism industry, highlighting the growth of New Zealand's southern island as a tourist destination.
