The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will implement new enhanced aviation security measures for all air carriers with international flights to the US.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary Janet Napolitano said the move will strengthen the safety and security of all passengers.

The new, more flexible measures will be designed to reflect the most current information available to the US Government and will apply to all passengers travelling to the US.

Napolitano said the measures will utilise real-time, threat-based intelligence along with multiple, random layers of security, both seen and unseen, to more effectively mitigate evolving terrorist threats.

Security and random screening measures will enhance in the passenger check-in and the boarding process, including the use of explosives trace detection, advanced imaging technology, canine teams or pat downs.

The new measures will focus security measures in a more effective and efficient manner to ensure the safety and security of passengers.
