The Port of Bellingham has awarded a $26m contract to ICON Materials for the development of a runway and taxiway at Bellingham International Airport.
The work will include constructing 174,000t of asphalt pavement, reconstructing the 6,701ft runway and widening the parallel taxiway from 60ft to 75ft.
The project, which will begin in May and continue through to October, will also involve extensive drainage and re-lighting work.
The number of passengers and variety of direct-flight destinations at the airport is expected to grow once the improvements are complete, which will also allow the site to accommodate larger aircraft such as the Boeing 757.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will fund 95% of the project, which amounts to a total of $29m.
During the project, the local airport will remain open and function normally.
