The Port Authority of New Jersey is to equip surveillance cameras at Newark Liberty International Airport with alarms in an effort to alert security personnel should the equipment malfunction.

Over 30 cameras at nine security checkpoints at Newark Airport's three terminals will be connected to the alarms.

The recent security upgrade has been undertaken, following a security breach on 3 January 2010, when a man illegally slipped under an exit lane rope to accompany his girlfriend to her gate.

The Port Authority is also organising a comprehensive audit of security procedures at all its airports, and planning drills to increase security awareness at checkpoints and doors.

The agency is also conducting monthly security meetings with terminal operators on a wide array of airport safety matters.
