Heathrow and Manchester International airports in the UK have installed Advanced Imaging Technology Secure 1000 Single Pose body scanners from Rapiscan Systems.

The systems have been installed at the UK airports after the UK Department for Transport (DfT) ordered them to prevent terrorist attacks.

By using advanced backscatter technology and proprietary image processing software, the new systems are designed to rapidly detect potential threats on passengers at aviation checkpoints.

The scanners will be used to perform comprehensive screening to detect non-metallic threats and explosives as well as metal objects.

The system generates front and back scans of passengers within seconds, creating a computer-aided image for inspection, and thereby streamlining the screening process.

The system, which complies with all US government passenger privacy and safety requirements, has been configured to improve overall checkpoint efficiency.

Approved by the US Transportation Security Administration, the system has also been installed at a number of US airports.
