Piedmont Triad International Airport in the US has unveiled a 9,000ft new runway (5L-23R), which will run parallel to the existing 10,000ft main runway.

The $150m third runway will offer the airport additional flexibility in scheduling simultaneous parallel operations and will also serve as a back-up runway.

The runway project has been funded by federal government grants and $30m secured from Airport Authority revenues.

The airport expansion project included the rerouting of a section of Bryan Boulevard, construction of a major new interchange entrance and the 165-acre, eight-building FedEx hub complex, which was opened in June 2009.
