Between January and July 2009, 4,671 strikes were reported, an increase of 22% over the same period in 2008.

Of the total, at least 57 cases caused serious damage and three led to planes and a corporate helicopter being destroyed.

The government tally for the second half of the year is still under process and could reach over 10,000 hits for the first time.
