Caticlan International Airport in the Philippines will begin a proposed expansion project this month despite opposition from environmental groups.

The PHP2.5bn ($53m) project has been approved by the National Economic Development Authority.

Caticlan International Airport Development will operate the airport under a 25-year build-operate-transfer contract.

The project received a notice to go-ahead with the expansion from the Department of Transportation and Communication in December.
