A 1.7-mile light rail extension link has been unveiled for passenger service to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, US.

The environmentally friendly rail link was built by Sound Transit in partnership with airport operator Port of Seattle.

Port of Seattle commissioner John Creighton said using light rail will reduce air emissions and traffic congestion.

The airport link project includes the new light rail station, pedestrian bridges connecting the station to the airport parking garage and a pick-up and drop-off area to the east serving the city of SeaTac.

The Airport Expressway and the Return-to-Terminal roadway loop were also relocated and upgraded.

Construction is underway for the next light rail extension expected to open in 2016 with service from downtown Seattle to Capitol Hill and the University of Washington.
